What is Ning?


According to Wikipedia, Ning is an online platform for users to create their own social websites and social networks. The unique feature of Ning is that anyone can create their own custom social network for a particular topic or need, catering to specific audiences.

From Ning.com:
"Ning enables you to create and discover social networks for the most important people and interests in your life. As soon as you sign in to Ning.com, you can track the activity on your social networks, keep up with all of your friends, and discover new social networks — all in one place."

Reasons for use

  • Social networking and learning.
  • Create Nings for class projects and/or focus groups.
  • To discuss specific topics, units, lessons, etc.
  • Build an online community with students, peers, anyone!

Ease of use

  • Very easy to use once the user learns the different parts of the Ning.
  • Fairly easy to set up, especially with the help of the tutorial slideshow below!
  • All Ning networks are the same, so once you've learned one, you've learned them all.
  • Advanced features can be learned to personalize your Ning network even further.
